SWK 114-001: Social Welfare History & Institutions Blended

Paper Description:

You will learn about elected officials on the city/town and state levels in New York City and New York State, respectively. You will educate yourself about any and all social work-related issues/social problems and past and pending legislation, including (if possible) the Dream Act and Social Work Investment Initiative. This assignment will assist you in preparing for the NASW-NYS Lead event on Tuesday, March 5, 2019.

Please write a three and a half (3.5) to five (5) page paper with additional title and reference pages. In other words, the title and reference pages are not included in the three and a half (3.5) to five (5) page requirement for this assignment. An abstract is NOT required for this paper. Please do not exceed five (5) pages. Papers slightly less than three and a half (3.5) pages (but not less than three ((3)) pages) will be accepted if the author is able to demonstrate thoroughness. Papers over five (5) pages will be penalized. For every page that surpasses five (5), the student’s final paper grade will be reduced by one increment (e.g., B+ to B). This paper must be typed, use Times New Roman font size 12, be double-spaced with 1” margins on all sides, and be in further compliance with APA Style guidelines (6th ed.). The purpose of the Know Your Legislators assignment is to learn who represents you and/or New York City in legislative matters on various levels and their issues and policies of relevance to social work. As a friendly reminder of the SWK 114 and SWK 115 content, you should focus your paper on representatives within the legislative not executive or judicial branches of our government.

You could prepare and organize your assignment in the following manner:

1.) Title Page with home district or LIU Brooklyn address (if out-of-state resident) as title; 2.) Identification of city and state incumbent legislators. You may use the following website to aide you in your search of incumbent legislators: https://www.usa.gov/electedofficials. You also can contact your/the local Board of Elections; 3.) Social Issues/Social Problems and Policies Relevant to Social Work – In addition to the Dream Act and Social Work Investment Initiative, please identify and describe at least two social issues/social problems and related social welfare policies on the legislators’ and challengers’ agendas that are relevant to social work; and, 4.) Identify and Describe Current Stance – of legislators on these social issues and social welfare policies; 5.) References Please incorporate course terms and other content (e.g., social issue/social problem, social welfare policies, social welfare programs, values) into your paper. Please note that your legislators are ones, who represent you from, I assume, your home (i.e., permanent) NOT necessarily the university’s address unless you reside out of state. Please consult with the instructor, if you have any questions or concerns.
